Thanks to a $5,000 grant from the Office of Public Instruction, School District 2 junior high students get to see what college is all about. Grant writer, Susan Plath, said she hopes the visits will inspire these young students to pursue college. "I think that's where dreams start. They see what the potential is, and they can work hard and hope to get to college one day," Plath said.
Lewis and Clark eighth graders, Miranda Iverson and Cruz Martinez, said they're already looking forward to the college atmosphere. "It's a lot less busy. Typical school everyone is always walking in the hallways, and it's all crowded, and it's just calmer here," Iverson said.
"I'm hoping to learn what I'll be doing in a couple of years. I think it'll teach me more about being an actor," Martinez said.
Susan Plath said this is the first time junior high students have been able to learn more about college in a hands-on atmosphere. "I'm really happy. They just seem so excited to be here, and for many of these kids it's the first time they've been on a college campus," Plath said.
The Lewis and Clark middle schoolers were the first to visit campuses on Thursday. Visits involve traveling to City College, MSUB and Rocky to see what each campus has to offer. Educators said the grant will allow all School District 2 junior high students to visit local campuses.
